Life is always full of challenges, but sometimes it just seems easier to give in and do what is easiest in times where it seems there is no way out. But we always have a choice. Doing the right thing in the face of adversity—especially when it comes to mental health, emotional stability, or even spiritual or physical health—can sometimes make a difference to no one but yourself, but sometimes it can make a difference for others as well. But how do we know what is the ‘right thing’ exactly?

Doing the right thing is not always the best; for sometimes the ‘right’ thing can be relative… what is right for you may not be right for the next person; so relatively speaking, what is ‘right’ might be different depending on the who or what or when or where it is that you do whatever it is that will make a difference.

However, when it comes to you, or your health (mental, emotional, physical, or even spiritual), what does doing the right thing mean?

What is ‘right’ when it is advice coming from others? It is said that a melancholic personality type always wants to do it the “right way;” whereas, a choleric personality type wants to do it “my way.” If you get a combination personality type then “my way is the right way,” which can be very dangerous when it comes to what is right for YOU.

Although it is wise to seek professional counsel and gain an understanding of all of your choices so you can make the best decision, knowing what it is ultimately best for you could be considered ‘doing the right thing.’ Regardless of anyone’s opinions—and they will be freely given, if not pushed on you at times—not everyone has all the answers, and not everyone can know exactly what might be in your best interests. Only you have that knowledge, and should be careful to consider but not totally rely on others’ advice, unless you are clueless as to what is in your best interest.

It is also just as wise, especially in matters of health, to know what doing the right thing means when it comes to healing and moving forward in life. If you are facing cancer you might take your allopathic specialist doctor’s advice, but if there is a cancer specialist in the naturopathic field that is more in line with your ideals then doing the right thing might be going with what your gut tells you, by seeking out both choices and getting treatment accordingly.

Health and healing and making decisions on what is correct when doing the right thing is important for your soul, your sense of peace, mental clarity, and emotional health. It is also just as important for your physical health and living to a ripe old age. Eating healthy could be considered doing the right thing, just as exercising more could. Doing the right thing is not just opinion, or a feeling or decision, but also should involve common sense.
