Cancer Fighting Foods that Contain Apigenin

Cancer fighting foods are found everywhere, but typically not in junk food, fried foods, highly processed, or other refined foods. In fact, these can aid the body in becoming a breeding ground for cancerous or precancerous cells and other diseases by clogging our arteries, lowering the immune system, being inundated by free radicals, and lacking important things like enzymes, vitamins, and constituents normally found in raw and health-promoting foods. 

So what foods are cancer fighting foods, and what do foods that prevent cancer have in them? One of the chemopreventative agents found in raw foods is apigenin, which is found in fruits and vegetables. However, specific fruits and vegetables have higher amounts of apigenin in them than others.

Apigenin is in cancer fighting foods

According to authors D Patel, S Shukla, and S Gupta, cancer causes about seven million deaths each year around the world, varying dramatically region to region. Associations with changes in diet in developing or developed nations are part of the environmental factors that make many cancers highly preventable through chemopreventable agents like apigenin.

Apigenin, say the researchers, is a “naturally occurring plant flavone (4′, 5, 7,-trihydroxyflavone) abundantly present in common fruits and vegetables including parsley, onions, oranges, tea, chamomile, wheat sprouts and some seasonings.”

Additionally, apigenin that is in cancer fighting foods, “has been shown to possess remarkable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties … [given in] an organ-specificity format.”

More cancer fighting foods with apigenin

A study done by a researcher at the University of Missouri (originally published by Cancer Prevention Research) was reported by Science Daily that a “compound in parsley and other plant products, including fruits and nuts, can stop certain breast cancer tumor cells from multiplying and growing.” Parsley and celery are most prevalent in apigenin.

Apigenin, says Salman Hyder, a Professor of biomedical sciences and Zalk Endowed Professor in Tumor Angiogenesis, helps block new blood vessel formation that feed tumor cells (such as breast cancer), which can delay or even stop the development of cancerous tumors.

Apigenin in celery and parsely, is one of the most amazing cancer fighting foods available. It is also found in plant products, including apples, oranges, and nuts. However, Science Daily says that even if cancer fighting foods contain apigenin, the constituent “is not absorbed efficiently into the bloodstream, so scientists are unsure of how much can or should be ingested.”

Professor Hyder says that “We don’t have specific dosage for humans yet,” but that it is important to keep “a minimal level of apigenin in the bloodstream is important to delay the onset of breast cancer that progresses in response to progestins such as MPA. It’s probably a good idea to eat a little parsley and some fruit every day to ensure the minimal amount.”

Cancer fighting foods may contain apigenin, but the compound can also be found as a supplement in health food sections or health food stores. Be sure to check with your physician before you make any significant changes to your lifestyle or diet, but adding apigenin-containing cancer fighting foods to your regular diet surely couldn’t hurt.
